your journey starts here!
This page is for new drivers. If you're already licenced - click here!
Our Standards:
How it works:
Our drivers are provided with a fully-branded car to use for work. We take great care of them, so you can concentrate on making money, but you must be prepared to keep it clean.
You'll agree start and finish times with the office (we have to know when you're planning to work, so we can take bookings and keep you busy).
It helps if you're flexible - quite often there is a good job with a pick up 30 minutes before your planned start, and the last job of the day ALWAYS takes you in the wrong direction! This means you'll need to communicate with our controllers, but they are there to support you 24/7.
You'll be taking fares directly from customers. We keep things simple and charge you a commission at the end of each week. You don't need to find money to pay for anything in advance - just turn up and graft.
You'll keep 40% of the fare. Top drivers can take £2000+ fares per week, which becomes £800 + Tips after our commission is paid. If you want this kind of income, you have to be prepared for some hard graft and antisocial hours! Remember that Taxis tend to get busy when everyone else is out having fun...
A solid income target for a new driver is £600 per week (if you're treating it as your main source of income). Once you've learnt the ropes you'll be able to scale that up and down to suit your needs.
Night drivers earn more than days (lack of traffic), and weekend work will boost your averages because it's so busy. We can help you choose a good pattern to suit your target.
What it's like to drive for us:
Longleys is still family-owned and we've supported our local community for sixty years!
On a typical day, you could be taking children safely to school, helping an elderly customer on a shopping trip and taking a high-flying executive to catch a flight. We even drive a few celebreties. You'll be an ambassador for Longleys and Canterbury - part tour guide, and part counsellor! Our customers have been relying on us for generations, and many have become good friends.
The atmosphere is professional and friendly. You'll get a lot of support from us if you put the effort in. We love good-natured banter between the drivers and the control team.
It can't always be busy, so a little patience is important - there is a natural ebb and flow to the workload, so make sure you have a good book to dive into between jobs or while you're waiting at the airport!
Driver Safety:
Canterbury is a lovely area to work in and we rarely encounter problems. You'll always be able to refuse service with our full support if you feel uncomfortable. Our vehicles are tracked, and fitted with cameras. We have many female drivers working at all hours with no problems. Most customers, most of the time, just want to get home safely and pay you.
What you'll need...
What you'll need:
You have to be over 21 for insurance purposes, and you must have held a full driving licence for at least two years before a Private Hire licence can be granted.
You can't hold a Private Hire Licence if you have more than 6 penalty points. They can be for minor offences, but we won't consider anyone with points for Dangerous Driving, Drink Driving or No Insurance.
You've got to know the area reasonably well. Everything we do is pre-booked and we do have Navigation as a backup, but you'll really struggle to make money if you're not used to driving in the area. You need to know landmarks such as pubs and supermarkets, and you need to know how to navigate between towns and villages efficiently (There will be a spot quiz!!).
