Longleys is a premium cab company covering Canterbury, Whitstable & Herne Bay. We are a friendly, reliable operator with exceptional customer service. We're still family-owned after nearly 60 years!
Due to our continued success and strong customer demand, we're looking for new drivers to join us.
You'll need the right balance of professionalism, good humour, and common sense! If you like meeting people from all walks of life and making them feel like valued customers then you'll fit in perfectly with us.
We have a very simple deal, which allows drivers to keep 40% of all revenue (plus 100% of their tips). We take care of everything else, and even provide the vehicle to work in (which includes Fuel, Insurance, Cleaning and Maintenance!). You'll just have to keep the car clean and concentrate on one customer at a time!
How much can a driver earn?
It depends on your availability. If you can work at peak times, it's possible to make money a lot faster than quieter times. Peak times are early mornings, evenings and weekends. We can help you plan an effective and realistic pattern depending on your goals and availability. Most drivers settle into a pattern of 30-40 hours a week which will realistically generate them £400-600, but many people have larger appetites and a hard working driver, working mostly peak times can make anywhere from £800 plus on a consistent basis. We'll never restrict your ability to make money.
What are we looking for?
Minimum Requirements
You must be over 21 for insurance purposes.
Full, Manual Licence Holder for a minimum of 2 Years.
You must live within 30 minutes drive of Canterbury.
We like ambitious people with realistic expectations, who enjoy being an important part of a well-loved local business. We're really proud of the work we do, and our huge customer base really love us.
To do really well here, you need to be a great communicator, Flexible, Thoughtful, Reliable and Consistent
Will I be self-employed?
We only work with self-employed drivers. This gives drivers a high degree of flexibility and work-life balance. We'll help you get set up.
How do I become licenced?
Because a Private Hire Licence is issued to you as an individual, it is something you need to pay for yourself. The entire process will cost around £350, takes around 4 weeks and involves an enhanced DBS check.
I've never done this before - What support do you provide to new starters?
To help take the pressure off in the first few weeks, we offer a guaranteed minimum income and a bonus scheme is available which can cover your investment in obtaining a licence.
I can't afford to pay upfront for my licence. Is there anything I can do?
Yes, if you are on a low income, long-term unemployed or receiving certain benefits, government help may be available. Don't let this prevent you from getting in touch.
I already hold a Private Hire Licence - Can I apply?
Yes of course. We will treat all applications in the strictest confidence.

Remember to attach a CV and tell us a little about yourself.
My whole career was in IT but I was made redundant unexpectedly and had to investigate other options. I have been with Longleys a lot longer than I expected – I thought driving would be a temporary stop gap, but I find it really rewarding. I meet new people every day from all walks of life. I'm making more money than before, and I can't see myself changing anytime soon! |
I was previously a senior manager in my industry. After twenty-five years of commuting two hours each way, I wanted to find something closer to home so I could spend more quality time with my family. Driving with Longleys is great because there is always work available. I expected to take a dip in income, but I make more money than I expected and drive a clean, modern car I can really take pride in. |
I needed a way of earning money with some flexibility to fit around my family commitments. I was surprised to find that it was possible to work in this way. I had to make an investment in getting a Private Hire licence but that’s easily paid for itself. I feel in charge of my working life. I was initially worried about my safety as a female driver, but all our cars have cameras on board and tracking, plus our customers are mostly regulars that I have got to know. I also have the option of turning away any fare that I am not comfortable with and that’s been great because I don’t feel pressured. |
